[OKDXA] Access to packet spots

Hi, Ken:

We're way out of town, and the local wireless providers tell me that I'll
have to wait until I get my towers put up to access them. (We live in a
valley, which restricts line of sight access from low antennas.) I'm using
wildblue.net, which is a satellite provider. They are faster than dialup
but not nearly as fast as the system on the OSU campus, for example.
(Sometimes their server seems to get overloaded, especially in the evening.)
Nonetheless, I successfully use this for email, downloading, uploading, and
watching spots. BTW, the packet cluster spots are very short, so even fair
latency does not seem to be a problem.

Startup is not cheap. You have to buy the equipment, and the dealer must
install it. I got mine from an outfit in Tulsa. I use a wireless router
with two computers hardwired and the others linking via wireless.

I hope this helps.

Bill, N5TU

Subject: [OKDXA] Access to packet spots

We are just far enough out of the city limits that we do not have access
to high speed internet in any form. We have been sufficing with our
dial up speed of 26.4 or so for several years, and it is fine as long as
I avoid downloads.

However, I would like to have access to packet spots out in the
hamshack, which is in a separate building about 100' from the house.

This will date me, but is it even possible to access a cluster via 2
meters in Northeast Oklahoma these days. I'm sure Coy recalls our early
days here, then Claremore, etc. If 2 meter access is not available,
does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance.

73, Ken K5KA
