Subject: Request for DXpedition funding

REQUEST FOR DXPEDITION FUNDING.

Announcing a major UK DXpedition to Malawi, 7Q7!

Mark Marsden, G4AXX; Rich Brokenshaw, M5RIC; Dick Allisette, GU4CHY; and
myself, Steve Telenius-Lowe, G4JVG, will be operating from Malawi between
April 18 and May 1, 2004. We have applied for the licences and the 7Q7
callsign to be used will be announced shortly before the start of the
operation.

We will be taking three stations, two of which will be operating at the full
legal power limit. Kenwood (UK) has kindly agreed to loan the DXpedition two
transceivers: the new 200-watt output TS-480HX which is ideal for
DXpeditioning, and a top-of-the-range TS-2000. We will have two linear
amplifiers, including an Acom 1000, while the third station will operate at
200-watts out. We plan to operate two stations as close to 24-hours a day as
possible, with the third station also on the air at peak times of propagation.

Antennas planned include a 10m monoband beam, a triband beam for 10, 15 and
20m, a pair of phased verticals for 40m and verticals close to the water's
edge for 75/80m and 160m. With the full legal power, we should be LOUD on all
bands!

Activity will be on all bands 10 - 160m CW, SSB, RTTY, PSK31 and, if there is
demand and if conditions permit, 10m FM.

Further details of the DXpedition can be found on our website at
www.malawi.digital-crocus.com which will be updated with news of the
DXpedition right up until our departure. We plan to have a log-check facility
on the website which will be updated regularly during the operation.

We are looking for donations from DX clubs around the world to help to cover
the high cost of this DXpedition. Each operator is paying the full cost of
his return air fare UK to Malawi and for the cost of accommodation and food
in Malawi. We are looking for donations to help cover the additional cost of
transporting equipment, the purchase and shipping of coaxial cable and the
cost of printing QSLs. The cost of the QSLs alone is likely to exceed $1000,
depending on the overall number of QSOs made. We have received a quote of
over $1500 for the cost of shipping equipment to and from Malawi.

We are looking at the possibility of shipping a 'Battle Creek Special' 160 /
80m vertical to Malawi and also at the possibility of shipping a 6m beam to
allow for operation on the 'Magic Band'. However, both of these projects will
require sponsorship as we will already have exceeded our aircraft baggage
allowance which is just 20kg per person.

Donations can be sent direct to me, Steve Telenius-Lowe, G4JVG, 27 Hertford
Road, Stevenage SG2 8RZ, England; e-mail: [email protected] Donations can be
sent by bank transfer, in cash (sterling, US dollars or euros only, please)
or by sterling cheque. If you wish to make a donation by bank transfer please
e-mail me for bank account details. All donations, no matter how small (or
large!) will be greatly appreciated. All sponsors, whether DX clubs or
individuals, will be acknowledged with thanks on our website and (subject to
a minimum amount) on our QSL card. If you make a donation to the DXpedition,
please e-mail the logo of your DX club to me for uploading to our website and
for inclusion on the QSL card.

The QSL manager for this DXpedition will be Roger Brown, G3LQP, an
experienced Honor Roll DXer and QSL manager who was the UK RSGB
representative on the recent Project Goodwill Albania, ZA1A / ZA1UT. All QSLs
will be answered, either direct or via the bureau system. The address for
direct QSLs is: Roger Brown, 262 Fir Tree Road, Epsom KT17 3NL, England.
Please enclose sufficient return postage (US$1 or one 'new' IRC) and a self-
addressed envelope if you QSL direct. Donations from individuals above and
beyond the cost of return postage will be very welcome with your QSL. QSLs
received direct but which do not contain sufficient return postage will be
answered via the bureau.

Finally, you received this e-mail because I believe you to be associated with
a DX club that may provide funding for DXpeditions. If this is not the case,
please accept my apologies for sending you this unsolicited request. Please
simply ignore this message. This is *not* an automatically-generated 's p a
m': if you e-mail me to indicate that you do not wish to make a donation you
will not receive a further request.

I look forward to hearing from you soon and, of course, to putting you in our
log in April!

73,
Steve Telenius-Lowe, G4JVG
