[OKDXA] W5 QSL Bureau

Jerry:

Floyd Gerald would be the best person to talk to. Since I was the "I"
sorter for two years I know how the process works.

1. You get potato sacks full of mail from foreign bureaus.
2. You have a post office type box for each letter of the alphabet.
3. When the piles of cards come in you have some "Pre-Sorters" come in and
sort the cards by the first letter of the suffix if the call and then you
put them in the post office box for that letter of the alphabet.
4. Some individuals get enough cards each month that they have to have
their own shoe box to fill with cards.
5. Once a month you mail or hand deliver, if the sorter is close by, the
cards and envelopes to the sorters.
6. The sorter then sorts the cards by individual and mails out the cards to
each ham when they get enough to mail.
7. You field a lot of questions and concerns.
8. You sell envelopes and stamps to hams that don't want to fool with
filling them out and mailing them into the bureau.
9. If so desired, the MDXA was the first bureau to do this, have a database
on a web site so that users can look up their own call and see how many
cards and envelopes they have and the last time they got a mailing.

Floyd gets a lot of help out of the MDXA members and it can be a revenue
stream for the club from the stamps and envelopes that are sold. It is a
big job and takes a lot of work each month. Floyd is not in good health so
it is a lot of work for him each month. Most of the sorters still live in
Texas, some in Mississippi and even a couple in Mobile, Alabama. I would
think that you would have to be retired to handle it, it is a lot of work.
But it is a very big benefit to the DXers of the 5th call district. Like I
said, Floyd would be the best one to talk to. He has some family issues
that he needs to tend to and that is the main reason he is giving it up. I
would be glad to answer any questions that you might have about it, also.

Jerry,

I would go straight to Floyd with any questions on the amount of work
involved. [email protected]

Coy:

I personally would consider it as I sort of semi-retired in July this year
but I'd like to get a feel for the 'true' amount of work involved. Who
would be able to answer this for us?
