Jim,

Good question, and Coy gave some good tips. The best advice I can give is
learn to effectivly listen. Hearing is a gift that most of us are born with.
Listening is a skill, to be learned and nurtured. The most effective DX'ers
listen to the bands far more than they transmit. I like to start at the
bottom of each band, and tune SLOWLY up, listening to each QSO long enough
to figure out who, where and how to work them. I would also say find a
seasoned DX'er in your area and ask questions. LOTS of questions, and pay
attention to what is told you. These folks who are on the Honor Roll didn't
get there in a years time. It took many years of dedication and work.

As to my dislike of computers......They are a fine tool. they do some tasks
very well. I just don't see them as a toy, for MY enjoyment. I also don't
see them as necessary for my DX chasing. For a serious contestor, yes! In my
opinion, packet clusters should take most of the blame for the rude, crude
behavior we hear on the bands. It is much easier and relaxed to listen to
the bands, and find them the old fashioned way.

Hope this is of some help.
