Some of us prefer to speak rather than communicate
at a slower pace through the use of finger controlled
make and break mechanical contacts to produce an Intelligently Interrupted
Continuous Wave(IICW)
signal which must be decoded through the use of some form of a Beat
Frequency Oscillator(BFO).
My first receiver in 1956 had a BFO knob on the front panel. Rigs now don't
have a front panel BFO knob.
Probably because the community at large is trying to discourage the use of
IICW signals for communication.
Sort of similar to what Indians did here in Oklahoma many years ago except
that they used smoke
instead of an IICW signal--- if you follow me. As you have probably noticed
the Indians have abandoned
that form of communication(subtle message). I personally prefer smoke due
to it's aesthetic value.
Hence the reference to AM & SSB, since it is a preferred modern mode of
communication by
a large percentage of our community.

I sent in my comments to the FCC on the 160 meter band plan the other day.
Thought you'd like to know since you had rung our bell.
BTW - what do they mean by AM and SSB anyway?
