I retired an old Kenwood HF that still works well.  It is my "safe" radio.  I fire it up once a year to keep it in good shape.
I should probably add a 2m HT to my safe box.

Good tip Ralph.  I’ve been thinking about getting a small 5 Watt CW transceiver to put in an EMP-proof container.  The QCX Mini is good but only works with an iambic keyer, I want it to work with a straight key.

This report describes ice core and tree ring evidence for several “super storms” from the sun.
If the smaller one were to hit today, it would take our GPS and communications.
A big one would take out the power grid world wide and damage computer storage.

Keep a radio in a grounded metal box for protection against the EMP (mine is in a metal file cabinet connected to a ground rod by heavy gage wire).
