[OFARC] The ARRL Current - December

I quit taking the print copy of National Contest Journal (NCJ) when they made it free online. QEX articles are mostly over my head, but I always read the Table of Contents just too see.

I would recommend two other non-ARRL publications as well.

CQ Magazine is  a great compliment to the ARRL publication QST. A bonus is that when there is contention within the “management” at ARRL, CQ Magazine covers it, whereas you never hear a word from ARRL. Also, if you compete in CQ’s great contests, it’s a no-brainer.

Nuts and Volts Magazine is also a great publication for those dabbling in electronics. It’s kind of reminiscent of all the old defunct magazines like Radio Electronics, Popular Electronics, etc. I think the guy that runs this magazine is a ham based on the content I have seen.

Great note Ralph.  So far I've perused both QST & On The Air.  This last magazine has CW as a theme on this issue and it’s packed with interesting info.  I plan on checking out QEX in the near future.  As you say, if you’re a member of the ARRL, you get access to all 4 publications online PLUS one publication in hardcopy form delivered to your home.  That’s a pretty good deal.

High frequency (HF) radio propagation is changing for the better as we enter Solar Cycle 25. Antennas are available for most HF bands (for example, triband Yagi antennas that cover 20, 15, and 10 meters, are widely available), but some don’t include the 12 and 17 meter bands. This article presents the construction details of a dual-band Yagi antenna for 12 and 17 meters. This antenna uses a direct feed, so no additional impedance matching devices are required.
