The short explanation.  Solar cycles are the result of planetary tidal
influence dominated by Jupiter and further influenced by Saturn, Uranus and
Neptune.  

 

Given the mass of the sun and the distance to the planets, tidal influences
are pretty small.  The paper does not explore the reverse case where the
planet orbits are driven by sun dynamics which of course would result in an
apparent correlation.
