[OFARC] Larry Lawson KK5KE - (SK)

OFARC club member Larry Lawson KK5KE passed away this week after a long
illness.  He was 69.  Notice was given by his sister-in-law Vicki and
relayed through friends Alvin KG5EGD and Alex KC5VEC.  Larry was preceded in
death by his wife Patsy, parents LaNelle and Al and Brother Don KE5ENC, who
sparked his interest in Ham Radio.  Larry's family was originally from
Fairfield Texas, south of Dallas.  In his early years, Larry moved around in
the Fort Worth area finally ending up in Houston where he attended college
before being employed at the City of Houston where he worked for around 30
years and finally retiring in 2016.   Details about Larry's early interest
and entry into Ham Radio is incomplete but FCC records show he was licensed
at least since 1995 with an Advanced Class license and then earning his
Extra, no small achievement since Larry was blind from birth.  Larry and his
partner Dianne were regular club members and Larry was active on the weekly
nets as well as an enthusiastic participant in club activities, particularly
on Field Day.  Larry always was always a pleasant to be around, patient and
an active doer. He really loved Ham Radio. 

 

I recall one time going to his place to fix some problem with his radio.  I
had a bit of trouble to start since there were no lights in the apartment.
After finding one bulb that did work, I discovered Larry had programmed the
radio on the fly using the voice module, something I could only do with the
software.  The problem was apparently a setting that did not trigger the
voice module.  After that fix, the radio worked fine and he reprogrammed the
unit again to his preference.  Impressive.

 

Larry is to be interred at the Forest Park East Cemetery on I 45 in Texas
City.  Due to the current Covid situation, services are deferred and the
memorial will be posted on line.   

 

I've attached a few pictures for his memorial.  We wish him God's speed to a
better place.
