The TC hamfest has come and gone. Because of the storm, some of the vendors
and participants were absent this year. The foot traffic was pretty good
considering. Several of the OFARC regulars were there including me WB5ANN,
Hal KG5OIR, Rusty, Rick KE5AOA and others. Wayne and a few of the HAMS
group were also there as well as the KARS and Baytown group. Always good to
see the guys from the other clubs out and about.
Tables were the usual stuff and I did not see anything I could not live
without. I did win the first door prize of some camo colored para cord
which I will stick in the rope box. The Houston Vintage Radio auction was
there this year and aside from a few knickknacks, the best stuff at the show
was some perfectly restored Hammarlund and National boat anchors from an
estate which I'm sure ended up in a good home. For the new guys, these
manufacturers along with Hallicrafters, EF Johnson, and RL Drake, built
military equipment during the war and supplied ham gear after WW2 dominating
the mid-price radio market until their demise in the 60s and 70s as hobby
transitioned from tubes to solid state and from CW to sideband. These units
were in cherry condition and its rare to see that kind of restoration
quality.
Hal and me cut out early taking the scenic route back on 146 cruising
refinery row on 225, wisely avoiding the construction on NB 45, still
managing to salvage the rest of Saturday.
The next hamfest is in Austin on August 2. Belton in October.
Its important to try and make the hamfests otherwise, if there is not enough
participation, there won't be any at all.
