The local scout council has asked me to arrange for RADIO presentations at:

* Merit Badge Fair - Feb 17, Westbury Baptist Church (W. Bellfort and Stella Link)

* Day Camps - see dates below, Camp Bovay in the Navasota area , 4th & 5th grade boys plus a few parents

* Scout Fair – April 17, Reliant Arena, explain what we do, get boys on the air

I will need help.

So far I have 1 person to help with MB fair and 1 to help with the day camps

I need more to work the day camps and 3-4 for the scout fair

Anyone involved at scout activities MUST have an up to date

certificate for Youth Protection Training.

Those teaching the merit badges must submit a MB counselor application

Adult application (working to confirm, but we should plan on it)

Files Attached:

PDF for registering as an adult with BSA (must be done every year)

PDF for registering as a Merit Badge counselor (must be done every year)

Notes for day camp

Mr Ralph,

Thank you for the feedback on Fun With Son. I will be involved in that event again in the coming Fall and we will be including your group "officially" as part of the rotations.

I would like to work the radio station into the Spring Adventure Camp rotations. The goal is to expand what we offer to interest the older Cub Scouts known as Webelos (4-5 graders).

We offer Dino Dig at the Derrick area and it tends to be redundant for the older Cub Scouts that come out multiple seasons since 1st grade. The radio rotation at this station would supplement our Webelos program enhancements.

Our Spring dates are:

Saturdays - Cubs Scouts would arrive at the station as early as 8 am based on the number of youth we have to put through the 6 rotations.

Feb 24

Mar 3

Apr 21

Apr 28

May 5

May 19

If you would like to support this effort, we can review the STEM/NOVA syllabus and Webelos Adventure requirements. I also support the Summer Camp that runs July 8-29 but would like to reserve radio operation for Spring and Fall to keep the program fresh for each separate season.

I look forward to working with your group.

Becca … I hope I have the correct person ……

I had a team of radio operators at Camp Bovay for Fun with Son and believe you are the person I spoke with toward the end of the day.

My team members really enjoyed themselves and the campers seemed to appreciate our activities.

We wish to build a working relationship with SHAC and make the enjoyment and skills of amateur radio available to all scouts.

My after action report of the day is attached.

It include suggestions for improvement and my thoughts on how to overcome some hurdles that I see.

I believe we need outreach from each side to the other in order to make it work.

I would be glad to hear your thoughts.

Vincent,

I always do an “after action report” for my events in order to solicit suggestions and to improve the event for next time.

A summary is shown below and a detailed report is attached.

Comments and feedback from camp staff would be appreciated.

Please provide contact information for the activity coordinator (I think her name is Becky).

ATTENDANCE – estimated at 170 boys (adding parents brings it to about 200)

The only serious issue faced was that we were not on the schedule and no none seemed aware we were coming.

Our first choice location was already taken, so we moved about 50 feet north and the scout leaders found us some tables and a pop up cover.

RESULTS

* The team operated from 9a.m. to 5:30p.m. Antennas were disconnected at 5:30 for safety reasons due to thunder in the area.

* HF (long distance frequencies) was active with lots of signals, but no one seemed to hear us calling. We tried 20m and 40m. This result was probably due to a combination of poor radio propagation (distant storms) and low antenna height.

* We used VHF, DMR, and Echolink effectively so the boys were able to talk to some distant adults and other scouts. (Always have planc B and C!)

* Many parents expressed a desire to build the code buzzers as a pack project (or even just at home)

* A few parents and teen age boys asked for more information on how to obtain an amateur radio license

* All the volunteer operators agreed the day was a success (and we would have needed more people if we had been included on the schedule)

* The “Fox Hunt” done by David Gent was a MAJOR hit. The boys spread the word about it and built excitement …. Make this a regular part of the presentation!

PRESENTATION

* Demonstrated Morse code using a simple circuit made with a door buzzer (3 sets available)

* Handed out pocket cards with Morse Code printed on them

* Put most of the boys on the radio. They talked with stations in the local area plus some in other states

* One station sponsored a “fox hunt” searching for a hidden radio using direction finding techniques (Major Hit with the kids)

* Leaders/parents were advised that learning Morse code qualifies for the “communicator” belt loop and is required for Arrow of Light

* Parents also heard a 5 minute talk on the use of Amateur Radio for emergency communications. The current situation in Puerto Rico is an excellent example.
