[OFARC] FW: TAK-tenna Petlowany

There seemed to be a lot of interest in this antenna design at the club
meeting so I’m sharing my experience and construction details so far with
everyone.  I have considerably more work to do to tune it up, though.  More
details to come.

Don,

I can see the attraction: small footprint, artistic appearance that blends
in with your yard decorations.

I’ve built this antenna:
https://sites.google.com/view/kn9b/spiral-dipole-antenna  but modified the
design somewhat.  I’ve not had a chance to tune it up yet.  Initial
characterization with a VNA shows it is definitely multiband, lots of
resonance points, but narrow bandwidth.  Will be challenging to mechanically
tune more than 2 bands.  SWR varies wildly from 1.5 to upwards of 25 when
off frequency.  The IC7300’s internal tuner would have problems retuning it
if the “spacing” changes slightly.  A ½ wave dipole will have > 6db gain
advantage over the spiral antenna provided the dipole is ¼ wavelength or so
high.  If you have room for it, you’ll have better results with a dipole,
either OCF or end-fed with a 9:1 balun.  I’ll bring the Pet to the meeting
to show.  Did not take particularly long to build, maybe have 8 hours
planning/construction time in it.
