Subject: Net Interference

All, we have been experiencing some interference from jammers on the 17 repeater and on some other nets operating in the Houston area. We have a pretty good idea of the location of the current interference source but we want to engage the repeater users to pin down the exact source as well as to practice locating interference sources.

To do this, you to report the strength of the interfering signal on the repeater INPUT which is 144.57 (-0.600 from the output).

There are several ways to do this:

Some radios can listen on reverse with a button function. Note signal strength.

Enter 144.57 into the VFO and switch between memory and VFO to receive on the input. Note if you can hear the interfering signal and the relative strength.

If you have a dual band dual receive, program the 144.57 in the B band and listen to both the input and output noting the signal strength.

Use a second radio listening on the input.

If you have a beam or directional antenna, note the approximate bearing and signal strength.

Once we have the city quadrant isolated, there are direction finding tools that can accurately locate the signal. Obvioulsy mobiles and portables are harder to find but it still can be done.

Your report should include:

Call and Your location
Time, date and listening frequency
Type and height of antenna
S meter reading or relative signal strength, (none, weak, moderate, strong)
Antenna heading if you have a beam or can get a DF fix.
Description of any audio in the signa; voices, music, scratching, hum or other characteristics of the signal that may be useful in uniquely identifying the signal.

Do the same for any other frequency that you may hear deliberate interference on.

Send reports directly to Wayne KA5QDG ka5qdg1 at juno.com and not through the reflector.

Thanks, Mark WB5ANN
