[OFARC] Lifetime Ham Licenses ?

I'm with Geoff,

This would result in the depletion of license calls and effectively
eliminate the vanity call option.
It would also be hard to figure out the status if someone should die and
the license remains active.
As noted, enforcement is already lacking so there would be almost no
hammer left for dealing with offenders.
I think an appropriate license term should be 5 years and institute a fee
for renewal that would cover the administrative cost and beef up the
enforcement section to specifically deal with the ham bands as well as cleaning
out the dead wood and release calls for those who would otherwise renew for
free. If people can pay $40 a year for ARRL membership they can pay $25
every 5 years for a license renewal.
Just like a life membership in any organization, they can always pay for
it. Make it $250 and a term of 25 years. This would effectively be a
lifetime call and would give a nice slug to the FCC for enforcement.

it's hard enough as it is with 10 year licenses to get Enforcement to act
on license renewals.

If renewal requirements are removed, how would enforcement retest a
convicted agitator?

I'm against life-time licenses. In fact, I think 10 years is exactly
twice as long as required.
