[OFARC] need microphone help

I have an old desk mike that used to give me good audio reports but has  now quit working
It is an 8-pin for my old Kenwood TS-140S

working SSB is see these symptoms
push the button and the xmit light on the radio comes on
talk and get no power, no signal, no ALC wiggle

when I use my hand mike, all is ok and I can make QSOs

QUESTIONS
would I be correct that probably the element is bad?
how do I check the element??
is there anything else I should be looking for??

Mechanical considerations
looking at it up the support column from the bottom, the element is cemented in place
the business end has a wire screen covering the element .... also not removable

if the element is bad ... I will just look for another microphone.
