Dear Mr. McClain:
Thank you for your recent letter regarding the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and LightSquared. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this important issue.
As you may know, the FCC granted a waiver to LightSquared allowing the company to proceed with plans to build a wholesale integrated broadband and satellite network. However, the waiver is conditional on the resolution of concerns about interference with global positioning system (GPS) satellite signals. In fact, the FCC instructed LightSquared to organize a technical working group of engineers and members of industries that use GPS signals to investigate the depth of the interference, and possible solutions. A final report is expected to be issued in July 2011.
