New River Valley Amateur Radio Club
Meeting held at the Blacksburg Fire Station #3

Meeting called to order at 7:00 PM

Secretary’s Report – Edward Lener
The October meeting minutes were sent to the club reflector on 1/12. No corrections or additions were received.

Treasurer’s Report – Steve Allen
Club finances in good shape. 2025 renewals coming in. Had some expenses for door prizes, Winter Field Day, and also purchased an antenna analyzer.

WinLink Update – Danny Wylam
Brush Mountain is working fine. One on Cloyd’s Mountain is down again due to internet issues.

Repeater Update – Mike Herring
Need to replace the can for duplexer.

Old Business

Installation of Officers – Cam Coble

  *   Update on slate as voted on at November meeting. Christopher (K4HZ) and Steve (WD4JIX) requested to retain their original roles.
  *   Pete made a motion, seconded by Jim all were in favor.

New Business

Report on January Eat and Meet – Chris Peters and Jim Hassell
Had a good turnout for the event at Sal’s. Price was right and service was excellent.  Larger meeting room worked out well.  Will send a letter of appreciation to the owner.

Report on Winter Field Day – Cam Coble
Used same location at Dublin Conference Center. Had 10 logged visitors and 6 licensed operators. Used the club’s new FT-710 Field Radio.  Also tried sending WinLink. The club voted unanimously to make a donation of $100 for use of the facilities.

Donation from KY4IY (SK) – Cam Coble
Use as intended by creating an HF station for new to HF hams to be loaned by the club. Kit so far includes:
    - Icom IC-7300
    - Power Supply
    - Cords
    Kit needs discussion:
    - Antenna – Jim Hassell will donate an End-Fed antenna
    - Coax
    - Protective case/cases for equipment
    - Length of time to loan kit out – Recommend 3 months with option to renew. Chris Peters will store the kit when not loaned out.

Blacksburg Fire Station.
Meeting room facilities there have worked out well. Patrick made a motion that the club also make a donation of $100 for use of the space.  The motion was seconded by Jim Hassell and passed unanimously.

2024 year in review, what to do for 2025 – Cam Coble
Cam led a review of club activities over the past year followed by a forward-looking discussion for the year ahead.

The motion to accept his membership passed unanimously.


ARES Activities – Zach Butler, KZ4KI
There has been a change in leadership for our district.  Weekly net on Tuesdays at 19:00.

Blings n Things – Cam Coble – Send any ideas for new themes for 2025.


Meeting adjourned at 8:55 PM

There were a total of 17 attendees (13 in person, 4 online)

Our next monthly club meeting will be on February 24th.
