VA QSO Party – Cam Coble

Will be held March 18-19th. We are not participating as a club but
individual members are encouraged to take part. Cam set up a Discord server
with further details and as a place for people to share their plans.
Several counties in SW Virginia including Floyd, Patrick, Bland, Wythe,
Grayson, and Smyth are among the most wanted so there are plenty of
opportunities for people in our region.

*New Business*

Report on Winter Field Day – Cam Coble

Held Winter Field Day at the Appalachian Conference Center in Dublin. Used
the DX Commander antenna and the new triplexer to run 3 different bands on
it. Had 13 logged visitors and 5 licensed operators. Made contacts on 20,
40, and 80 meters with the highest number on 40 meters. Cam also offered a
How to HF class before the event started to provide an introduction for
those who don’t regularly use the HF bands. More info and photos at

unanimous in support of accepting him as a new member.

Selection of Audit Committee – Cam Coble

An audit committee will conduct the annual review of the club finances.
Members will include Cam Coble, Chris Peters, and Roger Bell. They hope to
report back at the March meeting.

Replacement Parts for Repeater – Cam Coble

Mike Herring submitted a request for reimbursement on cabling and parts
used to repair the club repeater. Steve Allen processed payment for $64.35.

Proposal for Club Purchase – Cam Coble

Cam proposed replacing the club’s existing Yaesu FT-840 with a more modern
radio. He proposed the Yaesu FT-710 AESS which is currently #4 on the
Sherwood list. In addition to high quality audio it includes features like
a touchscreen and waterfall display.

Extensive discussion ensued concerning possible options. Len Sutphin made a
motion to sell the Yaesu FT-840 along with a few other smaller items to
help replenish club funds. Carlos Riveros seconded the motion and all were
in favor. Cam will run an auction open to active club members only.

Len made another motion to purchase the proposed Yaesu FT-710 AESS along
with a case and manual. The estimated total price was $1,121 before taxes.
Carlos seconded the motion and all were in favor. Carlos also donated $100
towards the purchase price.

Members also discussed club-related promotional items. Cam will share some
possible design ideas for stickers or patches at a future meeting.

*Blings n Things* – Book Nook

Members talked about a book about Ham Radio that had informed or inspired
them to get more involved in the hobby.

Meeting adjourned at 8:50 PM.

There were a total of 13 attendees (7 in-person, and 6 on Zoom)
