[nrv-hams] K2COE reception issue - solved

Jon,
My base station is a 50 watt Kenwood 732A, and my 2m/70cm antenna is a
Diamond X300 mounted about 30 feet off the ground. I think the setup is
pretty solid and the weak link in the chain is my knowledge base.
My HF antenna is another story. It is an off-center-fed dipole strung
(with a substantial "sag") between two poles. Some time ago, Hank Wallace
analyzed it with a fancy analyzer and it was working OK. Then we had some
construction done and the antenna was disconnected for a month or two and
some water got into the (100 foot) cable. I have since replaced the cable
(now 50 foot) and it's working better, but still not great - I used to be
able to hear WWV from Canada but cannot at this point. Likewise, I made
contact with the ECARS net in NJ but have not heard them since I replaced
the cable. These results may simply be a matter of poor propagation, but
an analyzer check might be informative.
FWIW, I watched Hank run his fairly elaborate analyzer and was left with
the impression the process was well above my pay grade ;-)

The trouble with many of today's college graduates is not that they're
ignorant, it's that they've been taught so much that just isn't so!
