Subject: NRVARC helping Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club to help NRVARC

Hey Len,

If you deem it appropriate.  would you mind to forward the following to our NRVARC group and any other entities you see fit?

Thank you ever so much!

Cindy

As most of you are aware, the Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club is a financial supporter of the NRVARC.  Those funds come from the proceeds from the club’s Fish Fries and apple butter sales.  As a club with aging membership, it gets harder and harder each year to find folks to work these events.  Each year there is a discussion about whether or not the club will do it again the next year.  As a result, the club is looking to some of the 40+ entities it supports for assistance in order to be able to continue these fund-raising activities.  This is your chance to help the club help you!

You can help in a number of ways:

Fish Fry:  It is a little late in the season, but the last fish fry for this year is this Saturday, September 8 from 5-7.  All you can eat fish, fries, homemade cole slaw, homemade desserts and drinks.  All for only $8.  Take-out also available.  Slusser’s Chapel, 1543 Mt. Tabor Road, Blacksburg.

Come and eat, and tell your friends!  The more folks who come, the more funds the club can sow back in to the community.

Volunteer for a couple of hours.  There are many roles that need to be filled.  (Most involve standing.)  The main shifts that need to be covered are from 4-6 or 7 and 5-7 or 8.  This is a huge help to an already-tired group of dedicated workers.  As an added bonus, you get to eat for FREE when you volunteer!  If you can help, please let Cindy Turner know when you will be available.  You can reach her at 540-577-0891 orcturner at memorialgardensnrv.com.  If you get free at the last minute, just show up.  Your help will still be very valuable and greatly appreciated.

Apple Butter:  The club makes apple butter every fall.  This is a majorly labor-intensive undertaking.  A few folks could help with cutting apples (There is a chopper device – no knives.  Super simple!)  for a couple of hours on Wednesday, September 26 and October 3 around 1:00 or 2:00 at Slusser’s Chapel, 1543 Mt. Tabor Road, Blacksburg.

The real labor need comes at the cannery (in Wytheville).  Club members are there from about 6AM until about 3 or 4 PM.  It is a VERY long day.  There are actually two half-day shifts, but there aren’t usually enough workers to avoid having to work the full day.  This work is mostly standing, but there are various labor levels, and there is time for sit-down breaks in between the different tasks.  From 6-9 there is heaving lifting while unloading the apples.  Lighter work comes during that time while washing the apples.  From 11-1, the empty jars, lids and rings are being steamed.  That is light lifting in transferring the empty jars.  From 1-4 filling the jars and placing the lids, rings and labels on them is light work.  Strong backs (preferably fresh backs that have not been there since 6AM) are needed again from 2-4 for moving the cases of filled jars out of the way, loading them onto carts and unloading them into cars.  Lunch is usually provided around noon.   This is a lot of work and a good distance for someone to travel.  It is certainly understandable if you are not available to help with this portion.  However, if you or someone you know is looking for a fulfilling way to spend part of a Friday (even just a couple of hours), please contact Cindy Turner at 540-577-0891 or cturner at memorialgardensnrv.com.

You can also help by purchasing you fall apple butter from the Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club and telling your friends about it as well.  It is available in two sizes (pints and quarts), two flavors (cinnamon and cinnamon & clove) and two prices ($5/pint or $7/quart).  The quart is obviously the better deal, and the pint is a great gift/stocking stuffer option.  The pints are also popular among the folks who think they will never finish a quart, but this stuff lasts forever.    Please contact Cindy Turner for fulfilling your apple butter needs as well.  Delivery is certainly an option.

Many thanks for any participation you may be able to provide, and know that it is understood if you cannot.
