[nrv-hams] Field Day and National Parks

Here's a heads-up for people who will be operating N4NRV on Field Day. The
usual Field Day exchange we will be hearing and logging is operating
category and ARRL Section. This could be something like "4A GA" or "1D EPA."
The exchange we will send from N4NRV will be told to us before we go on the
air.

This year we may run into something out of the ordinary. During 2016, the
centennial of the National Park Service, the ARRL is sponsoring a year-long
operating event called National Parks on the Air. Each NPS unit (there are
hundreds of them) has been assigned a designator consisting of two letters
and a two-digit number. The Blue Ridge Parkway, for example, is PK01.
Shenandoah National Park is NP51. Hams are going to the various units and
putting them on the air for others to work. It's fun.

Some groups are going to try to combine Field Day with National Parks on the
Air. They are likely to be transmitting both their Field Day exchange *and*
their NPS unit designator. Field Day logging software won't accept the NPS
unit designators, so there is no way to log that information if someone
sends it to you. Don't worry about it. Just log the Field Day exchange and
keep on keeping on.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me off the reflector at
n3kn at verizon.net.

See you at Field Day! 73, Kay N3KN
