Abstract: Carter Craigie, N3AO, will give a demonstration and presentation about operating ham radios outdoors for fun and challenge! Learn about contacting far away places with VERY little power. He will bring an extensive array of equipment: 4-5 low power transceivers, battery power supplies, antennas and feedlines, 4-5 paddle sets, and an extendable mast. Everything he brings will be able to fit into a backpack! All rigs will be opened for inspection and passed around. Participants will learn how to send the letters "CQ," and the numbers "73" in Morse Code. Carter will talk about fun Contests for Low Power (QRP) operation, and give "Tales from the Trails - Appalachian Trail in PA, MD, and VA, and more..."
Biography: Carter Craigie, N3AO, is a very active ham whose primary interests are QRP operating and DXing, especially with CW, SSB, and digital modes, such as PSK31 and RTTY, as well as JT65. He enjoys operating out of doors, especially during summer. A special interest is "hiking and hamming" on the Appalachian Trail in various states. Carter volunteers at the SKYWARN Desk at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Blacksburg, VA. Carter is also an active contester, espeically in QRP contests. He contest credits include the Flight of the Bumblebees, the NJ Skeeter Hunt, QRP To The Field, VA QSO Party, and ARRL Field Day. Carter is also an active Volunteer Examiner, helping many people earn their amateur radio licenses.
Carter is both a life-long teacher and learner. He has worked as a college professor of Folk Lore, English, and Photography, and also enjoys introducing people to the outdoors. Carter is the 2013 Lay Leader in the Newport-Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, in Newport, VA, and loves singing in the choir.
