I did not see any reference to this activity on this listserve, but I think
that some of you might like to participate either as SkyWarn or agency
support stations. Glen Sage should be able to steer you in the right
direction if you have no affiliations.

To All,
As many of you know, we are having a Simulated Emergency Test (SET) on October
19th from 9:00 am until noon. The Red Cross will be the lead agency
on this drill. As with most of our emergency drills and actual events
in this area, weather has been the root cause. As always the SKYWARN
system will be a major part of this drill. The National Weather Service
office in Blacksburg, VA will be preparing simulated weather reports and
bulletins. The Skywarn desk at the NWS Blacksburg office will be on the
air and active throughout the exercise.
The name for our exercise is "Operation Juan II". This will be a
replication of the weather event that occurred in November of 1985 that
brought record flooding to locations such as the Roanoke Valley, Buchannan,
Covington and Craig County. It brought flooding to much of the Blacksburg
National Weather Service forecast area.
A website has been setup to provide information and solicit participates in
the exercise. This website is http://www.w4ghs.org/juan.html and the
registration page is http://www.w4ghs.org/Juan_Registration.html . You may
sign up for communications service at an agency or for SKYWARN. If you
serve at an agency you will still have traffic for the Skywarn desk. If
you sign up for just SKYWARN, you will receive a packet of simulated
weather messages to report throughout the drill. Agency assignments would
involve traffic that will be logistical, tactical and health & welfare
traffic that is now handled through a system called "Safe and Well". If
you choose to participate by registering, you will have both outgoing and
incoming traffic for this drill.
We can use your help in this drill by supporting an agency location or
being active on SKYWARN. Either way we need you to register online or send
me an email with your name, call, location that you like to serve. If you
are willing to serve anywhere you might be needed, state that in your email.
Please forward this to others that might be interested in the exercise.
Thanks,
Glen Sage,
Emergency Radio Officer
Virginia Mountain Region, American Red Cross
