Since the rise of cell phones, I think most repeater sponsors have done away
with autopatches. They're expensive to operate and posed problems for
control operators who had to ensure that autopatch communications were not
inappropriate or downright illegal for the ham bands. Some autopatches had
problems with anonymous people making crank 911 calls that got the repeater
licensees in big trouble with the police, and people making long-distance
calls back in the days when that could run up a big phone bill the repeater
sponsor had to pay. It all got to be way more trouble than it was worth, and
just about everyone got a cell phone anyhow.
In addition to Russ's list of area repeater information, you may want to
pick up a copy of the ARRL Repeater Directory. It comes in a pocket-size
format, a desk-size format, and Travel Plus for Repeaters which comes in a
CD-ROM or a mobile GPS downloadable version. All depends on how much you
travel outside the area that Russ's list covers. Repeater information
doesn't change very often, so one of these publications is usually good for
several years' worth of reference.
