I have just heard that we have 3 open seats in the Campus CERT (Community
Emergency Response Team) training that starts Oct 1 and runs 6:00 - 9:00pm
Monday and Wednesday nights through the month of October. In this program
you will get AED/CPR/First Aid training and certification, triage, fight
suppression, search and rescue training, ICS overview, disaster psychology,
terrorism briefing, and more. Each participant gets a backpack containing
personal protective gear, and other supplies to allow being part of the
solution in disaster situations.
For licensed hams there is a bonus. Through a grant, I got some dual-band
handhelds and accessories that are 'loaned' to members for a year,
renewable if still in the area. There are some requirements to use the
radios to check-in to and act as net control (with some training if
needed). I'll give the details to anyone interested.
If you are interested please email me at prepared at vt.edu. Remember you
have to be able to attend all the October Monday and Wednesday sessions
from 6 - 9 pm. The sessions are held in Sterret building out on Southgate,
details will be given to those who apply and are accepted. Obviously you
don't have much time to get in on this. You DO NOT have to be associated
with Virginia tech to participate, this is a community effort. John C,
Len, Carter and Kay and Ben are CERT trained, join the effort.
