I know that many of us are wondering about what to do as Hurricane/Tropical
Storm Sandy is making her way up the eastern seaboard.
Here are some remarks I just sent out to the VTARA club at Virginia Tech:
There are several 2-meter SKYWARN Net Repeaters in our area you may want to
listen to: 146.985 in Roanoke, but very easy to hear in BBG, 147.045 a
wide-area coverage repeater on Big Walker Mountain, and 147.180 in Dublin.
Any one of these three repeaters will have SKYWARN information, and
especially that first one, 146.985 (-600) (107.2 Tone), as that is the
present main SKYWARN repeater.
On my visit to the BBG NWS this afternoon the current word is that our area
should expect high winds Monday night into Tuesday, with possible gusts in
the 40-60 MPH range; any big snow will fall in the Greenbrier area of
northern West Virginia, but some snow might fall in our area, mainly in
possible depths of 2-3" but not much more.
I was advised to keep monitoring the projected path of Sandy; if she changes
her present course, and changes direction into a more southwesterly
direction, then we could be in for some long-lasting and heavy rainfall and
winds, perhaps over several days. The winds may make our trees with their
beautiful fall leaves lose some of their branches, so be on guard for downed
limbs on the roads.
The forecasters are watching several models, and some are in conflict with
others. The latest word is that the storm may be "re-grouping" and
strengthening somewhat. The warning area is now up to Cape Hatteras, in
North Carolina.
Expect a cloudy day on Saturday, and temperature quickly dropping on Sunday
afternoon.
I wouldn't recommend travel to eastern Virginia in the next 5 days.
Use your brains, and get your batteries and water supplies topped up.
Let me know if I can be of any help to you.
