Donnie Coleman AB4I from Fairlawn is one of the winners of the 2011 Stew
Perry Topband Distance Challenge. This 160 meter contest is sponsored by the
Boring Amateur Radio Club (no joke!) of Boring, Oregon. This is the same
club that originated Kid's Day, by the way. Anyhow, Donnie won the "100%
Search and Pounce" category in the contest and that deserves a big round of
applause. The full results are posted at
http://www.kkn.net/stew/2011_Stew.htm.

In contesting there are two basic approaches to finding stations to work.
One is called "running a frequency." This is when you stay put on one
frequency and call CQ, letting the other operators come to you. The other is
called "search and pounce." This is when you move up and down the band
looking for stations who are calling CQ. Many contesters use both
approaches, depending on which one yields the best results at any given
time.

Also on 160 meters, Carter N3AO just received the 50th confirmation to
complete his Worked All States award on 160 meters. This band is not easy to
work with a dipole antenna and 100 watts. The last state was Utah.
Congratulations to Carter on this accomplishment.

The 2012 edition of the Stew Perry contest will be on December 29-30. I need
one more state to catch up with Carter and get WAS on 160, so I'd better get
in the Stew!
