Subject: Latest on new Amateur Radio Tower zoning in Christiansburg
To: Russ Abbey <kg4mav at gmail.com>
Hi Russ,
Thought I would send you the latest about the tower zoning situation in
Christiansburg. The Town's Assistant Manager and Zoning/Planning
Administrator, Randy Wingfield, said the current zoning code does not allow
lattice towers in Christiansburg. In addition, he has provided information
stating the current zoning code is in compliance with the Federal PRB-1 and
Virginia State code.
However, the planning sub-committee had Mr. Wingfield prepare a revision to
the zoning code. I believe I sent you a copy of his revision. Subsequently,
they made some changes to his proposed code concerning licensed Amateurs. I
am attaching a copy of the new proposal. After reading the amended
proposal, I still believe it does not follow the intent of the state code
and it will be difficult for any Amateur who would like to install an
antenna or tower.
The Christiansburg Planning Commission will have a meeting to discuss and
vote on the proposed change in the code. This meeting will occur on August
13th, Monday at 7:00 p.m. If there is no opposition to the wording of the
code, I believe they will agree to publish it in the "News Messenger" for
two weeks and then on to the full town board for discussion and most likely
approval. During this meeting on the 13th, there will be an opportunity for
the public to speak, limited to 5 minutes for each speaker.
It would be great to have other Amateurs at the meeting if possible. Mr.
Wingfield said he has only had 4 to 5 requests for antennas or towers from
Amateur licensees in the past 10 years. I believe Amateurs in the area are
not much of a concern to the town. I am hopeful if we show up at the
meeting, the town may try to do more to accommodate Amateur Radio.
Thanks for taking time to read this and pass it on to other Amateurs who
may be interested.
73,
Roger Galloway
