That's excellent, Ron!

The week before a major DX contest and during the contest itself are great
times to log some nice contacts even if contesting per se doesn't interest
you. During the week before a DX contest, operators are testing and tweaking
their stations. Sometimes during the preceding week they'll be playing
around on bands where by custom contesting is not practiced (12, 17, and 30
meters), so it pays to tune around those bands as well as 10, 15, 20, 40,
80, and 160 meters.

The next major contest is the CQ Worldwide DX Contest, CW edition. It's from
0000 UTC November 26 to 2400 UTC November 27. Same exchange as the phone
version: signal report (599) plus CQ zone. For us that would be 5.

As in the phone contest, don't call operators from the 48 contiguous states
of the USA. They don't get any points and it makes them cranky.

The CW is pretty fast. If you don't feel up to jumping into water that deep,
just listen around and try to copy anything at all, just for fun.

A fine way to find out what contests are coming on the air that might help
build up your DX, USA states, and VHF grid totals is found at
