[nrv-hams] APRS & nrv-hams Digest, Vol 18, Issue 4

The 27th of February looks good for me at this time. I have been running a fill-in digipeater running 5 watts, an igate and a map display using ui-view for about two weeks now and it appears to be stable. I will next get xastir running on Linux to compare functionality.

There is a need for more fill-in digipeaters and igates as I am passing packets to the internet from over 150 miles away.

I cannot remember any technology that I have sought to implement that has such an abundance of outdated and bad documentation. Once you get up it seems so easy.

If people want to do a 2-3 hour workshop some Saturday, we can install one of these packages on their laptops. It does not take a powerful machine. Mine are about ten years old.

February seems a long way off to me, right now! But all too soon, it will be among us!

Jim, Ron and Carter:

Jim, many thanks for the kind and timely reply. I concur on the use of APRS for public events, etc., as would vastly improve situational awareness, which in today's world is a much needed asset. Although I have read a good deal on this matter, I have not obtained any hands on experience. Thus, the collective efforts of Ron, Carter and yourself on this matter would be most appreciated.

On behalf of the NRVARC, I extend my thanks in advance for your collective efforts. Please followup with Ron and Carter and advise which one of you will spearhead this effort. Because the club has a annual dinner in January 2011, the next monthly meeting will be Feb. 27, 2011. Does this provide adequate time to develop a nice presentation and demo of APRS?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Roger,

I cannot claim to have a very thorough knowledge of APRS, but I do have APRS capability and an interest in learning more about its use. As a club, using APRS during the events we support would certainly give us some excellent experience and give us some insight into how to utilize APRS during an emergency.

In his e-mail, Ron suggested a presentation to the club. With my current level of APRS knowledge, it would be a fairly short demo. However, I would be glad to do some more investigation and work on this with Ron and Carter.

Jim,

Between Carter and yourself, knowledge of APRS and the use thereof is far above the rest of us. Your thoughts?

Best,
Roger Bell - N4FPA
