I am planning to organize a class this fall to assist those who want to get involved in ham radio by earning a technician class license. I have not set the dates and times yet, so this is just a heads up. I usually get a list of people that are interested and we work a best time and day for weekly meetings. I run this class in a fairly unconventional manner, using adult learning techniques where the students participate in teaching one another alternated with hands on experiences so it is not really a class as you may remember from school. In the past I have had great help from Rick Armstrong, Kay and Carter and Dr. Bill Davis, professor at Virginia Tech and sponsor of the VTARA, and Nathaniel Frissell w2naf, a Tech student and experienced license class teacher.

I am guessing we will start around 3rd week of September and meet 7 times. This time the class will require buying the ARRL book and payment of the test fee in advance so that the test will be included in the last meeting. I had at least ten people who could have passed but only three made the effort to get to a test session. If they have already paid, I think they will sit for the test and I think this will work better. We will ask either the club test team or the VTARA team to run the test session.

Anyway, if you know someone who would like a structured way to prepare for the test and learn the culture of ham radio (this is where you come in) or want to be a part of the coaching team, let me know. One does not have to be affiliated with Tech to participate and you don't need to attend all the sessions to help out. Ask Carter, I think he really had a good time working with us.

Thanks,
