[Novice-Rigs] novice license statistics?

I'm trying to put together a little talk about the impact of the novice 
license and an looking for novice license statistics. Joe Speroni's page 
at http://www.ah0a.org/FCC/Licenses.html is a start but only goes back 
to 1997.

Does anyone know where I might find information before 1997?

Did the old callbooks have novice/general/advance/extra population 
statistics in them?

Maybe an article in one of the magazines where someone has already done 
this search/tabulation?
