Hi Aaron,

Just a little history.  Years ago, there was a 3-lander who started QSL.net in the early days of the internet to give ham radio operators an email address and an email reflector if a ham club needed it.  The system he had was housed on servers in his home.

Time marched on, and he wanted to hand it over to someone else.  Scott, KA9FOX, of QTH.com stepped forward and took it over, and found a place for it on virtual servers.  Scott put the free reflectors at QTH.net (note, the .com is Scott’s pay-for ISP business).

So I’m sure you’ve been to:

https://admin.qsl.net/index.php

following the proper link on that page takes you to:

https://mailman.qth.net/

This is where you can create new lists.

Since it is “free”, support requests have to stay on QTH.net (note the “net”).  The universe of free email reflectors relies on donations. Many individuals and clubs send along donations. Some clubs never send any support $ at all.  (NLRS has been a good financial supporter.)

The email reflectors use “Mailman” software.  Sure, it is cryptic.  There are some references to find on the web.

In general, as our list admin, I’ve been very pleased with the “free” reflectors that QTH.net offers.  When I’ve needed assistance, I’ve tried to do my homework beforehand and then crafted a support request. Then I wait patiently. Usually, I’m surprised how quickly I get a response. (It could be due to the strong $ support the NLRS and its members send along 😊 .)

I configured our nlrs reflector to accept plain text, rich text, and html email postings.  Historically, “text” postings were required but time has marched on and all three types of postings are common. Later, I added permission to attach .jpg, .png, and .pdf attachments. I intend to add .xls and .xlsx in the near future.

If a club already has a website, the club should consider what email reflectors their ISP offers. In the absence of that, I think the QTH.net option is a good one.

I hope this helps and I can discuss further via direct email if you like. If you are at Aurora ’25, we can talk there as well.

Subject: [NLRS] Would you recommend qth.net?

Another club I'm a member of is looking for a mailing list solution. How has qth.net been?
