I am so sad to hear this news.  Mel's obituary can be found here:

Mel was one of the most dedicated VHFers in the region.  The last time I saw him was Sunday afternoon of this past January VHF Sweepstakes.  He called me on my cell and asked if he and Carol could pull their rover pickup into my driveway in Roseville and hook up to AC power.  He wasn't getting enough voltage to his 1296 rig to get it to work.  He soon arrived, and I got him hooked up in single-digit temps.  He tried calling W0GHZ without success, and I told him to rotate his truck a little further east, and then they easily got Gary.  I climbed up in the truck and mounted his 6M dipole for him, and they made some more contacts.  Then I disconnected him and sent them about a block south so I could work them again from EN34.  I'm so glad I got to see him that day.

Carol was a saint to accompany him on all those rover trips, every single contest year after year.  I would get as many as 60 contacts and a bunch of multipliers from them each time.  I'm sorry I didn't know in time, I would have gone down for the funeral.

Always very deliberately:  "Kilo - Charlie - Zero - Papa - Rover - standing by".  73 OM

Thank you for sharing this very sad news, Donn.  Mel was really one of a kind and had an ever present naughty twinkle in his eye.

He will be very sorely missed.

I got word last night that Mel, KC0P passed away in his sleep on March 30th.

Mel was a good long-time  friend and loved ham radio.    A ready  supporter of  NLRS,  he
was a consistent NLRS Monthly Breakfast attendee and usually had interesting and
informative presentations for Aurora meetings.  As an avid VHF+ contester he operated
Rover (along with Carol, N0HZO)  in most of the contests (including January in
Minnesota!).  He will be missed by NLRS and VHF+ contesters in the upper mid-west.

There's talk of a radio garage sale (NO details) in Rochester "sometime" in the future.
