[NLRS] Transverter/attenuator

 Dave,
Regarding using your Icom 706 for your 1296 IF rig, that sounds fine however I would caution you as to having to drop the 706 to low power when going to 1296.   Speaking from experience, in the heat of battle, you can easily forget to switch from 25 watts to 1 watt when going from 2m to 1296.   Also, some of these older 2m rigs often have a high power spike on transmit even when set for low power which can be a problem too.  In summary, its always a bit dangerous to use an IF rig that is capable of high power in a low power application like this.
Also, since you are not using a split IF for the 1296 transverter, any attenuator you put in the 144 IF line for transmit will also be an attenuator on receive.  You can probably live with a few dB of attenuation on IF receive, but going from 25w to 100 mw is 24 dB if my math is right and if so, you do not want 24 dB of attenuation on your IF receive line.  So you either need to go with a split IF (separate IF transmit and receive lines) or find a way to lower IF drive power that is battle proof.
If you go with the 10m to 2m transverter for the 1296 IF, one advantage is that you still have 2m available on your 706 to coordinate with.   How much power does the 2m transverter put out?   Does it have separate 2m transmit and receive ports that can match up to your 1296 IF input/output ports?

Anyone have any suggestions fior me....
I have a 1296 transverter (3 watt) that takes max 100mW input on 144mhz.
I was thinking of putting this after a 144 switch from an icom 706...but the low setting on that rig is 1w. And I'd prefer to use 2m at 25w or so normally into the amp.
I do have the option of using 28mhzto a transverter (2m ) but in either case I'd need to find a good attenuator on 144 to drop power to 100mW max
Good attenuator?Or full on 28mhz 10W input max to 100mW 144 out
Thanks.

I MAY get a little portable airtime this weekend on a couple of bands, but not currently set up decent yet.
I modulate, therefore I am! ...73, and all that jazz, Dave...N9TTX Always remember: "It could be worse.....it could be raining." Marty Feldman from "Young Frankenstein"______________________________________________________________
