***** Donn, WA2VOI, has checked on the availability of the Nicollet tower site for Sunday.
He was going to call for an update. I haven't heard the result of the call.

Good timing, Gary... US mail brought their reply today: quote "We look forward to having
your group at the site on Sunday August 18th. I will let Keith Lekness (?) know that you
will be returning. Sincerely, John Rasumssen (?), President [Joseph N. Nicollet Tower And
Interpretive Center]
(The name spelling is iffy at best... had trouble reading the handwriting)
All we need now in good weather.

(The reference to "returning" is from the Grid-pedition we did in 1994 for the Persides
Meteor shower. I sent material relating to that with the letter asking for permission to
operate there in August)

NEW TOPIC
Jim, K0KFC, Gary, WB0LJC, and I discussed places to stay Friday and Saturday nights. Jon,
W0QZ, had raised the possibility of staying at the Dakota Magic Casino a few miles north
of Sisseton and Jim mentioned that Milbank, SD has places to stay. Milbank is 30 miles
from the Wilmot Rest area. Staying there Friday night would save a 3-1/2 hour drive
Saturday morning (in the dark) from home. Its 40 miles from Wilmot to the Casino and then
30 miles back to the Nicollet Tower on Sunday morning.

Jim is doing more research on places to stay in Milbank and the Dakota Magic Casino.

At the moment, I'm planning on staying in Milbank Friday night and the Casino on Saturday
night.

Subject: [NLRS] Update July 15th 10 G Cumulative weekend August 17 & 18

Hi Everyone,

A few updates in the last week.

Changes are *****.

Here is the basic info:

Rovers: WBØLJC, Larry, WA9TT, Chris NØUK and Holly KØHAC. WØZQ may
rove if it balances out the numbers.

Rover Group #2: , VA3ECO and one or two other unnamed ops. They are
planning to rove in the Red River Valley. Barry, VE4MA, felt there were
too many fixed ops. He was going to lead the group but may stay home to
give them someone to work. This groups plans are still very much in
flux. They have no history with us as rovers, but have roved with Barry
in Canada previously. ****Best info that I have is they plan to start on
the north end of the RRV on Saturday and end the day near Sisseton. Then
on Sunday travel back north.

Fixed#1 at the SD sites: KØKFC, WØZQ, NØKP and WA2VOI have all
expressed interest in going to SD for the weekend. KØSHF on Saturday
then EN26cg on Sunday at his trailer site.

***** Donn, WA2VOI, has checked on the availability of the Nicollet
tower site for Sunday. He was going to call for an update. I haven't
heard the result of the call.

******KØMHC, Jim, will be at the SD site for Saturday only. Not
operational on Sunday.

******W7XU, Arliss, unconfirmed rumor that he might go to the SD sites.
I understand he still has some work to do interfacing his rig and amp.

WFØT is interested as well as another op who wished to remain off the
list until a decision was made.

The fixed sites are at the Wilmot Rest Stop, EN15lj86HO on Saturday and
then at the Nicollet Tower site EN15KP48BG, on Sunday. Donn, WA2VOI, is
coordinating with those at the fixed site. If you plan to go there I
will send you his information.

Fixed site #2:VE4MA, Barry from his home QTH. Goal is to work rover
group #2 for the most part. I'm trying to convince him and the other RRV
rovers to join the group at the SD sites. This is still up in the air.

Others:

For MN ops who may be on from home or near home. The distances to these
stations from the rover sites are on the short side and the paths poor.
However, given the short paths the "locals" should be workable from most
of the rover sites.

No word from Bruce, W9FZ and Janice KA9VVQ. They have been moving, or
may have finished moving, from their house in Woodbury to their new QTH
in the middle of Wisconsin.

******N9EM, John, at best a maybe. Elevation problems with his dish and
a planned move of equipment to a 10 story building site hasn't occurred.
Willing to listen for a signal.

*******WD0BGA, Karl, his 10 G equipment isn't working because of a
failed rotor. Small chance that he gets it replaced before the contest.

*****NØLNO & NØUTP don't plan to be on for the contest.

******KCØSKM, May be on from an unknown site near Alexandria. He is in
the process of moving to the area. If he is in the area for the weekend
he will try to get on. He doesn't have his equipment in Iowa, so no
activity from there.

Rover route:

Saturday the rover route starts near Northfield, MN and travels down
I-35 into Iowa before turning West on Iowa A38, using a few sites near
Forest City. Then turning back north to end the day at Kiester,
EN33en03PT. Distances to the Wilmot site average around 330 km. Longest
about 370 km. Allow some time at Kiester to try long paths with W9ZIH,
Hannibal, MO EM49hq, KØAWU, N9LB and other Wisconsin ops. If they are on
for the contest W7XU, KMØT and WØLGQ are easy from Kiester. KØMHC if he
is on from home in EN26. Other long shots are to WQØP at 521 km and NØOY
at 629 km. Maybe even K2YAZ if there is time. Then spend the night in
Albert Lea. Kiester is an exceptional site for this part of the country.
However, most of the rover sites are only OK, but should be good enough.

Sunday Start at Kiester again to try any long paths that we didn't have
time for, or missed on Saturday. Sundays route is along I-90 to either
US 169 on MN 15. Then North for the day. Distance to the tower site
starts at 360 km and gets shorter during the day. Ending the day around
250 km.

Most of the sites I have looked at have limited views in any direction
other then to the fixed site. There are a few that are good to the
South, especially the Kiester site. It would be used after 6PM on
Saturday and early morning on Sunday, probably not much later then 8 AM.

Operating times 7:30 AM to 6 PM on Saturday. Sunday 7:30 or 8 AM on
Sunday until 5 or 6 PM. I am willing to find sites if anyone will stay
on later either day, especially Sunday. For the longer shots we would
start earlier and stay later either day.

Please let me know if you will be on and if you are interested in
joining either the rovers or those at the fixed site.

If you want to get on and don't have a rig, we have loaners for you to
use. Let us know.

73, Gary WBØLJC
