Mary and the group:

Quite a few years ago I started occasionally seeing FM on 144.100. It was not consistent and would come and go. One day it was particularly loud and after listening a bit I decided to bend the rules a bit and, on the theory I did not know they were not amateur operators, asked them who they were. Turned out it was truckers out of Manitoba whose company had bought radios for a supplier without the benefit of having them programmed to anything other than the default. They were loud as they were passing through ND about 10 miles from me when I talked with them. They were very forthcoming with information including the name of their company.

I was an OO at the time so reported the incident up the chain. I got back a "not much can be done about it" type note from the OO coordinator at the time.

After sitting on the situation for a few months I happened to mention it here, on the NLRS reflector. To say things happened after that is an understatement. Within a couple of days the trucking company had been visited, helped to get a frequency and their radios reprogrammed.

In any event if there is ever any chatter I would, on the theory you do not KNOW it is not an amateur, hop on and ask them who they are. They just might answer.

I am hearing an FM carrier with a roger beep on 144.200 pointed at 85 degrees... about S5 at its strongest... this is  looking over open field so isn't being generated in my house....
