Hi Jack
How about a home brew moxon on a painters pole.  Lots of info on the web about this including these two sites:
https://blog.radioartisan.com/homebrew-lightweight-6-meter-moxon/https://www.jpole-antenna.com/2014/06/11/building-the-6-meter-moxon-antenna/

Should work better than a long wire.
Speaking of antennas, if anyone local needs any VHF/UHF/uW band antennas for this weekends contest, fixed, portable, roving, drop me a note direct.  I should have some both short and longer boom antennas for most bands.

A sad state of affairs. CW beacon band loaded but I worked only one CW
station. N4VC EM66 was 559...easy. Tried to work KX5S EM14 but no joy.
Heard one SSB station (K9PPY) but he was in and gone. That was it. :<(

I am having serious trouble with the long-wire  with the overall effect
of running 5 watts to a good antenna on 6! Will troubleshoot and rebuild
tomorrow.
