Dennis was my first mentor as I was being bitten by the VHF+ weak-signal bug. I was living in Grand Forks, ND and attending Forx ARC meetings. There were ads for Kenwood TR-751s in QST. I bought one. With his encouragement, I bought a Crunchcraft Jr Boomer. Since a ground floor apartment is not a good place to operate, I looked at terrain maps and selected a location out near Aneta, ND to operate from the side of the road. I had the antenna up about 15 feet and would operate for contests and sprints. Dennis would always be the first station I worked. He would pass intel on what he was hearing.

I’m sad and sorry my mentor has become SK.
