Six character for grids *IS* okay for VHF Contests (5th and 6th characters
are 'ignored') but is required for 222 & Up Distance and 10 GHz & Up
contests (required for BOTH SENT and RECEIVED Grid exchanges and it IS
checked for the latter two contests). My thought is that is doesn't "hurt"
for VHF Contests, so why not practice using it. ALSO, for fixed station
entrants (that is, non-Rover), the web based log submission for WILL ask
for YOUR grid locator, and wants SIX characters for that:
What 6-character grid square did you operate from during the contest?
You will also know if its OK when you go and submit your log at the end of

Just to make sure that everyone knows that there is no longer a "robot" per
se for log submissions, the contest e-mail addresses have been 'retired'
for most ARRL contests (definitely for the January, June and September VHF
Contests) and the way to submit your log is by way of an interactive web
page/form at http://contest-log-submission.arrl.org
With the form being interactive, your feedback is immediate if there is
something 'not kosher' in the QSO: lines and CHECK that the category the
form tells you is the category you intended to enter. You no longer have to
wait for an e-mail find out if there are any issues with the log you have
submitted.
A new feature of the form is that it will now calculate a "Raw Score" based
on the QSO points and Multipliers found in the QSO: lines in the log file
(no cross checking is done).
