Hi Jon, 

I use the TX inhibit capability on the FT817s that I use for microwave IF rigs on the portable stations. Absolutely do it . But If that plug comes undone or is not connected, then you could have a bad problem! 

I have been considering using the DC voltage up the IF coax way of keying instead but of course that is difficult to work into a sequencer and does not prevent the IF TX from going up stream....It is better for IF switchover between bands though.
