Good evening vhfers

After some comments and thoughts from this past contest and others in
recent history I just wanted to make some comments on the use of digital
modes.

First off as many of you know when I contest I like to go for the biggest
score possible. Also if I can't put a full effort in for a contest I like
to make as many qsos in the time I can get on to give as many points as
possible. Either way I like to maximize my time on the air in a contest.

As many have noticed digital modes are a double edge sword. You can make
qsos via digi modes you couldn't otherwise make via ssb/cw and also its
tough to qsy to other bands when they would be possible. Also it might for
some people mean no more ssb or cw modes.

For me I use digital modes when ssb is slow or non existent. I run digital
modes on a certain band when on I'm ssb on a different band. If I'm on 2m
ssb I'm watching 6m Ft8. If 2m ssb is slow I'll go to Ft8 on 2m.

At the same time I'm on digital modes though I'm always watching 50.100 to
50.200 for ssb and 144.170 to 144250 for ssb. Please note I don't operate
much cw. I can as a last resort but I'm not very good at it and don't
really like operating cw. Maybe someday this will change as I better my cw
skill which I been trying to do on and off for 7 years.

Another very good way to increase your score in contest is to pick up
contacts via meteor scatter using Msk144. Typically between 4am and 8am
Sunday during a contest that's about the only activity. There are people
on every day that can help you get familiar with the modes before contest
time.

Bottom line is digital modes are here to stay but using them efficiently
during a contest is something that is unique to each station. When to be
on ssb/cw or digital modes is something you have to judge for yourself. If
you only want to operate one mode that's fine to but you will not be
maximizing your time on the air.

Hope to see you in the next contest!
