Bill, check out RF Consultant's TPI-1002-A signal generator. See https://rf-consultant.com/products/tpi-1002-a-signal-generator/ . Its 35 MHz to 4400 MHz. Requires connection to your PC running their software, cost $280. I have their Model TPI-1001-B which has the same generator but also includes a broadband calibrated RF detector.
Only caution that I offer is that the signal generator signal is digitally derived and tends to include some harmonic contents when used in the VHF region .... the VHF signals are not pure. As you move up in frequency to UHF and microwaves the significant harmonic content roll off. There is no filtering on the generator output; perhaps this is an issue with other "low cost", wide spectrum, digital signal generators as well. I discovered this when using the TPI-1001-B detector input to profile some VHF band pass filters and I was getting some unexpected results (now attributed to the then unkown harmonic content at VHF). Now that I know this, I can work around this weakness so its not a problem (for what I do).
Let us know if you find some better solutions !
