The 600 MHz reallocation is only the latest of many by our Friendly Candy
Company.
How many of you remember when the UHF TV channel numbers went up to 83?
Channels 70 through 83 was the first group to go, 84 MHz (806 to 890 MHz).
Where the original U.S. and Canadian analog cellular systems got their
starts along with the Land Mobile and Public Safety radio systems at 800
MHz.
The next group to go was channels 52 through 69, 108 MHz (698 to 806 MHz,
aka the 700 MHz band) which coincided with 'analog' TV going away and the
creation of virtual channel numbering - meaning that what the public might
know as "Channel x" is no longer on that "RF Channel" (as an example,
Chicago's "Channel 9" is presently on RF Channel 19, but still identifies
as "Channel 9").
This latest "600 MHz" reallocation eliminates channels 38 through 51,
another 84 MHz (614 to 698 MHz, but UHF channel 37, 608-614 MHz, was never
assigned to TV because of worldwide radioastronomy interests in VLBI, Very
Long Baseline Interferometry) so the highest numbered RF TV Channel going
forward will be 36 (602-608 MHz).
The Friendly Candy Company has brought a LOT of money in to the Federal
coffers from the auctions of the 700 MHz, and now 600 MHz, spectrum.
73, JK
