[NLRS] HP 3200B VHF Oscillator Question

I’m attempting to troubleshoot a short (B+ to B+ Com) that appears to be
located within the RF shield of the oscillator.  To get the shield off, I
have to remove the attenuator probe.   The problem is that I can’t get the
attenuator probe off.  The manual says to rotate the attenuator retaining
ring one complete turn.  It rotates approximately ¼ turn before I meet with
stiff resistance.   Not wanting to destroy anything, I’m turning to you guys
(or gals) for input.   Do I keep cranking or am I missing something?
