This is the first time I ran WSJT-X in contest mode. I ran into the some problem with the two formats of reports.
I found the quickest way was to uncheck the NA VHF contest box, then click halt transmit then double click on the last received report ( K0VG W3AGN -5) than the reports would change and contact finish. Then recheck the box to go back to the new format. Hoping the next contact was using the new format.
This is the first time I Ran more than S&P. It wasn’t unusually for 3 stations to call back. The 1st call box was very helpful. It would go to the first report decoded saving time from having to select one. I could work all three without having to CQ . Working 3 stations in 3 minutes.
I also used the hold Transmit Frequency option when running. Hoping it would keep my signal in a clear spot.
During S&P for multipliers it was also useful. Just like working any pileup it also keeps your signal out of the crowd where it stands a better chance of being decoded. Otherwise when you clicked on the station WSJT-X would put you on the same frequency as everyone looking for another new grid.
The weak link of my contest setup was the laptop I was using. When the band filled up it was having trouble decoding everything in time to display it before the transmit cycle started. Sometimes the grid square was messed up. It would show up something like CQ W3AGN NF19, instead of CQ W3AGN FN19. I’m not sure if this is a problem with my computing problem or a bug in WSJT-X.
My next step is to get a logging program, like DX Lab, to handle the dupe checking and grid tracking. After making a few contacts on Saturday they showed up has having been worked before. I had to do some housekeeping on the log files to make it work right for this contest.
Any way it was fun having the band open up on Sunday. I was planning to only work the contest till 6PM, then leave the cabin. I ended up contesting till about 8:30, then doing the choirs around the cabin I was going to do during down times in the contest.
