KL7UW and wife plan to be with the group near Copper Harbor as part of a
lower 48 summer tour.
I am still undecided. I was at the overlook and MT Brockway in 2012.
Donn had loaned me a 3 watt PA and it worked great. I built my own
before September and ended up with an ARRL certificate for 8th in the
world and the 8th call area winner.
My Airstream that I camped in the state park east of Copper Harbor is
sitting on blocks. I took the torsion axle out a couple years ago and
the replacement that I ordered isn't an instant fit.
I have roved most years since 2012 and that is a lot of work. Sitting at
a couple locations is inviting, but for scoring I'd like to be in the
smaller of the two main groups whether roving or sitting still.
I'm considering trying to coerce the Fiesta into charging the radio
battery to make roving way more economical (38 mpg vs 16 mpg). Then I'd
be looking at hotels like Friday and Sunday nights at Duluth and
Saturday at Grand Portage for roving, or at copper harbor for three
nights. I checked for rooms at Duluth and found nothing available, but
it might have been two far out. The tall ships festival isn't happening
this year at Duluth.
Any progress on rover to Keenewah coordination communication? Since
changing my Tracfone from GSM to a CDMA model I haven't found a location
it doesn't work, but I didn't test it along the north shore or UP last
time I was there. It would seem that a VHF rover rig on 2m or 432 ought
to be work across the lake for that coordination. Just takes two such
stations, one roving and one sitting if cell phones can't be made to
work. 2m was up last night south of here I was hearing a couple Missouri
repeaters on FM, one near Kansas City, typical SSB range.
