Yesterday I checked a couple sites near Allison IA on my way home from
the Threshing Reunion west of Charles City.
EN32OT we have used as a group several times, its 5 miles north of IA 3
and a mile east of IA 14 north of Allison. At the intersection the NW
path is blocked by corn, but 30 feet east the path is very good starting
over beans and the corn field is much lower. To the west southwest on
the south side of the intersection looks good and we worked IYT, Chris,
and Holly in Nebraska from there the last time we were there.
EN32OR a couple miles south of IA 3 and about 3 miles east of EN32OT
doesn't meet distance anymore, but the last couple years I have tried to
use it, tall corn prevented any distance contacts. This year the section
north of the gravel road is all in soy beans and the view is over a
valley for a couple miles when near IA 14. A good alternative. There is
another gravel road on a higher ridge a couple miles south but the
ground rises going north from that road for a quarter mile making it not
great for Twin Cities contacts.
Both sites were not good east because of rising ground and trees.
I haven't made a decision on roving or sitting in Jim's yard. I like
roving in central Iowa, I know more locations and can overnight at home.
But we didn't do bad in SE MN and NE Iowa last fall, just my scouting
trip added 545 miles of travel. I haven't seen any data on closed roads
but I suspect that many valley roads have had a tough year because that
part of MN and IA have had several floods this dry summer for the rest
of Iowa.
What spots will need to be checked before we rove? I recall a couple
that were dependent on crop.
