[NLRS] Fwd: 2017 ARRL 10 GHz & Up Contest

Hi Donn,
I remember 1979 was cold, and I saw the corona, but I was focused on taking sun noise readings at 432 MHz. Superior for 2018 sounds good, however I will be pursuing Superior or other (lake Winnipeg?) in 2017. It does not matter from a club perspective since I am too far away to count...normally...or at all?

Hi Barry.
I "kind of" agree with you... but. 1979 I was on the lake north of Winnipeg Beach in
the -20 cold. (And colder at totality !) High, thin clouds so no corona was visible.
Got to see Baily's Beads, though. 1972 in Prince Edward Island there was ONE cloud in the
sky from horizon to horizon... over the sun at totality ! If I'd been 5 miles either east
or west of where I was it would have been good. Got to see shadow bands, though. 1968 in
the Carolinas just cloud cover... not much to see. Bottom line: I'm going to western
Nebraska to see the eclipse... PERIOD. That I can drag along the 10GHz equipment for
Sat/Sun contest, OK, but the contest is not my main interest this year. Western Nebraska
because that's the best odds for low clouds and visibility... about 35% cloud cover.
Best odds east of the mountains AND in the area of near maximum duration... >2:30. Max
time is ~2:40 near southern Illinois... but cloud cover is 50-70%.
(I'm not really planning on the next eclipse, 8 April 2024) even though it goes over my
hometown in Western New York. Early April is cloudy, and its not beyond the realm of
possibility to have a lake-effect snow storm then that would dump 8" of snow. Might be an
interesting experience if you had both, though. Hmmm.)
"We" have kind of talked about Lake Superior next year, 2018. Maybe we should just put
that on the calendar and plan accordingly ? I would be up for that. Also gives a year to
plan/build.
