Hello contesters:I have some news that may be of interest to those of you who play in the “nosebleed” frequencies. This comes from Dave – K8CC, so please take note that he is the one informing us of what is happening. Some of you may be aware of the recent announcement from the ARRL the they are dropping the annual August UHF (222 MHz and above) contest, which caused much anguish and gnashing of teeth on the VHF Contest reflector. Not that the ARRL is planning to abandon the upper frequency bands, but scuttlebutt has it than an ad hoc committee put together by the ARRL to study VHF/UHF operating recommended dropping the contest in favor of possibly replacing it with a similar event in the spring. Many experienced UHF operators believe that August is an excellent time of year for a UHF contest, due to opportunities for enhanced tropo propagation and summertime weather for rover operations. Well-known VHF/UHF operator and innovator Wayne Overbeck, N6NB is bringing together a loose-knit group of prominent VHF/UHF clubs and interested individuals to resurrect the August UHF contest independent of ARRL sponsorship on the original dates and with the original rules.A preliminary web site announcing the re-birth of the August UHF contest is now QRV at http://www.augustuhf.com. I am supporting this effort by volunteering to do the log-checking for it. I also plan to have my UHF gear QRV again by August to participate in the contest, and I hope that other MRRCers who have UHF gear will mark those dates on their calendars and join in on the fun.K8CC – Dave
It struck me (Chuck) that maybe the Ad Hoc committee put together by the ARRL was not actually made up of UHF contesters or simply did not take into consideration the propagational advantages of holding the contest in the Fall. Anyway, I thought some of you might be interested in what’s going on and may want to take a peek at the above mentioned website to read about the alternative contest.
Just an FYI to those who may be interested.
